One of Hamilton’s Best Watches Gets Another Solid Update

When the world got its first glimpse of the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph in Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar, no one quite knew what it was. Was it vintage? The handset would suggest so. But in that case size? Couldn’t be. Was it contemporary? No such watch existed in the current catalog. All viewers knew for certain, this watch was the key to unlocking the secrets of interstellar travel – and it was a really, really cool looking watch.

Fast forward and the watch that began its journey as a prop, developed in collaboration with Christopher Nolan himself, has seen a real world release and a few updates in case size offerings. Now, The Murph sits as one of Hamilton’s most successful models that it currently offers. With broad appeal for small wrists, large wrists, those seeking a dress watch, or classic daily driver, the Murph seems to be one of the rare watches that everyone agrees on. It’s just that good.

Today, this modern classic gets yet another welcomed update. First, the original, 38mm black dial Murph, which was previously offered on a black leather strap, is now being offered on a stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding steel clasp. The bracelet tapers ever so slightly from the 20mm lugs, making for a pleasant yet still prominent impression on the wrist. It’s such a seamless and natural fit for the style, it’s a wonder that the piece wasn’t sold on a bracelet from the very beginning.

Second, and perhaps the biggest departure from the original film watch, is the new dial color. The 38mm Murph is now available in a textured white dial. Still present is the tanned lume, evoking the vintage style and personality of this classic dressy field watch. For now, the white variant appears to only be available on a black leather strap (albeit, a very pleasing one with complementary white stitching.) But we can’t help but wonder when the steel bracelet will be making its way over to this variation.

All in all, it’s a solid update to a watch that, frankly, doesn’t really need much changing or updating. When a watch works as well as the Murph generally does, its often because of its simplicity, its purity, its clarity. The real challenge of lasting design is arriving at a product where, any additions or subtractions from the piece, would ultimately detract from the final product. In the case of the Murph, with its understated, elegant, and genuinely timeless look, small evolutions like this are far and away the best course of action.
