Sincere Fine Watches 70th Anniversary: H. Moser & Cie Presents the Pioneer’s First Grand Feu Enamel Dial in Purple Fumé

For celebrating seven decades of perpetuating horological excellence, Sincere Fine Watches has been on a roll. They’ve already  debuted two special editions which you can read about here and here, and now, the third edition in the lineup presents a special piece with H. Moser & Cie. Presenting the Pioneer Perpetual Calendar Concept MD Purple Enamel Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition, the 20-piece edition showcases an exquisite combination of technical innovation and minimalist aesthetics.

At first glance, the rich purple dial features nothing else but fine gold hands gesturing to the main hours, seconds, and power reserve. Along with are two large windows for the month and date, which runs on H. Moser & Cie.’s “Flash Calendar” function that allows for an instantaneous date change at midnight. But yes, let’s talk about that color.

A Grand Feu enamel dial in purple fumé

In recent years, purple has emerged as a bold and captivating choice in timepieces, reflecting a broader appreciation for the color’s rich history and multifaceted symbolism. Purple’s association with luxury dates back to antiquity when the dye was rare and expensive, reserved for royalty and the elite. Today, beyond its historical prestige, purple carries a wealth of symbolic meanings that enhance its allure. It is often linked with creativity, wisdom, and mystery, qualities that, while subjective, definitely brings more than just aesthetic appeal.

In watchmaking, purple’s versatility allows it to harmonize with various materials and designs, from classic gold and stainless steel, a combination that’s not foreign to an aesthetically experimental brand like H. Moser & Cie. Thus in this exclusive Pioneer model, it’s worth noting that the watch features a “Grand Feu” enamel dial in a mesmerizing Purple fumé hue, a first for the Pioneer collection.

The process begins with an intricately engraved pattern on a gold base, resembling hammered metal, which interacts beautifully with translucent pigments. These pigments are carefully washed, crushed, and applied one by one, ensuring a seamless gradient without visible pixelation. Achieving the iconic H. Moser & Cie. fumé effect, each dial undergoes multiple firings in a furnace, repeated between ten and twelve times. This rigorous procedure imbues each piece with the depth and complexity that defines the “Grand Feu” enamel technique. The final result resembles a look that reminds me of something almost leather-like, especially accentuated with the dark graduated edges, in the fashion of a natural patina that tells a story through the subtle changes in color, giving it a rich, lived-in look.

A sporty, minimalistic dress watch

The dial’s design is strikingly minimalistic, stripped of almost all indications except for essential markers. The power-reserve indicator, positioned at 9 o’clock, is denoted by plus and minus signs, while an offset small second sits at 6 o’clock. A leap year cycle indicator is discreetly hidden on the movement side. It’s important to note that the date function can be adjusted at any time of day, in either direction, without risking damage to the movement, thanks to the sophisticated design that integrates the calendar mechanism directly into the movement’s core architecture. Partially skeletonized leaf-shaped hands filled with Super-LumiNova further enhance readability, ensuring optimal legibility in low-light conditions.

The heart of this timepiece is the HMC 808 hand-wound manufacture movement that offers a seven-day power reserve thanks to its double barrel design.

Needless to say, this special collaborative piece is an addition that bolsters the Pioneer collection, in that it’s designed to feature robust yet refined constructions. This said construction is complemented by elegant touches, particularly within this 18K red gold case, which features contrasting black DLC-treated titanium inserts for added durability and style. There’s no doubt that it’s a handsome piece, further emphasized with sublime finishes that are hallmarks of H. Moser & Cie’s watchmaking excellence. Moderately-sized at 42.8mm, the case boasts a water resistance up to 120 meters, where the open caseback features Sincere’s 70th anniversary logo.
