Gucci is a brand renowned for its timeless elegance and beautifully crafted accessories. Now that the brand has entered the world of high-end watchmaking, it is not surprising that there is a significant emphasis on both style and high quality craftsmanship. Given the brand’s reputation for exquisite craftsmanship, it is the natural progression that Gucci has now developed a novel, in-house ultra-slim movement to drive their latest ultra-thin watch, the GUCCI 25H.

The Gucci caliber GG727.25 has been launched as part of the venerable luxury brand’s centenary celebrations. Current Creative Director Alessandro Michele has also used the symbolism of numbers as part of the movement’s expression. ‘7’ is there to encapsulate a sense of completeness, ‘2’ represents balance and cooperation and ‘5’ hints at curiosity and freedom. The new movement has been developed in collaboration with Kering in La Chaux-de-Fonds and is incredibly thin measuring just 3.7mm.

Gucci has a track record in timepieces that dates back to the early 1970s. The brand first launched its first watch collection in 1972 and was the first major fashion brand to insist that its watches were entirely Swiss made. The temptation to ‘manufacture’ licensed branded watches was never an option for the Italian brand and they have stayed true to this for the past half-century. The watches are primarily manufactured in Switzerland’s La Chaux-de-Fonds, whilst the dials are being made and hand-finished in Gucci’s Fabbrica Quadranti facility in the Canton of Ticino.

Visible through the GUCCI 25H’s sapphire caseback, the automatic movement is wound via a micro rotor and boasts a 60-hour power reserve. The movement is stylishly finished with a wave pattern decoration on the movement plate and blued screws punctuate the high-quality construction of the 24-jewel mechanism. However, the watch case that houses the Caliber GG727.25 is equally as impressive.

One of the hottest watch styles of the past few years has been the integrated-bracelet steel sports watch. From stalwarts to new kids on the block, it has become a watch style that perfectly bridges the often tricky gap between sports and dress watch. Now the GUCCI 25H enters the fray with a case that measures a very versatile 40mm with a very slim case profile of 7.2mm. The mid case features a recessed winding crown that is obscured behind the bezel to give the watch a sleek line that is uninterrupted by the crown.

The steel watch has a splash of red on the dial where the name of the caliber is announced: GG727.25.A. The inspiration of architecture is evident through the use of subtle horizontal dark grey lines across the dial to give the effect of depth to the slim watch.

The GUCCI 25H is also available in two Tourbillon Editions in platinum and yellow gold. The GG727.25.T has all the design hallmarks of superb watchmaking with a 26-jewel, self-winding flying tourbillon. The movement plate has a guilloche finished wave pattern and the iconic Interlocking G logo is engraved alongside blued screws. The horizontal finishing on the platinum bezel is a perfect accompaniment to the dark grey horizontal lines on the dial that also has the calibre reference subtly engraved in the upper half of the dial. The lower half of the hand-finished dial has a cut out for the all-important tourbillon that can be observed by the beholder.

These watches truly are stylishly elegant and could be enjoyed equally by both gents and ladies, with options in steel, with and without pave-set diamonds, alongside platinum and yellow gold models. The integrated bracelet, slim profile and technological excellence make it an impressive high watchmaking debut and a watch that people are just going to love wearing!
