Following up on last year’s adventurous limited edition, Doxa has announced a second SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler limited edition. Like the first piece, which pays homage to prolific adventure novelist Clive Custer and his series of Dirk Pitt Novels, the watch features a beautiful stainless steel case with an evocative worn patina. The dial, which is antiqued and textured dark gray, bears the engraving of a compass rose as well as warm, yellowed luminous indices.

For decades, Doxas have been a favorite of both professional and hobbyist divers alike – a sort of, if-you-know-you-know watch for the most hardcore divers and those who dedicate their lives to oceanic exploration. That, or for those who are diehard fans of Dirk Pitt. But the enthusiasm exists for good reason. As dive watches evolved from the late 50’s and into the ‘60s, Doxa was on the forefront of dive watch technology, with the very first helium-escape valve appearing on a Doxa Sub 300T.

For those who share an affinity for the iconic dive watch company, Doxa and Clive Cussler are virtually synonymous. Across 28 books, written between 1976 and 2021, Cussler tells the daring stories of Dirk Pitt, a decorated Air Force Pilot turned oceanic adventurer for the National Underwater Marine Agency (NUMA). Throughout the books, as Pitt embarks on all manner of dangerous and exciting adventures and exploits, two things remain his constant companions – one is a Colt M1911 Pistol, the other is his orange Doxa Sub 300T.

The love for Doxa is something that Cussler and his most famous character shared. Throughout his time as both a novelist and as the founder and chairman of NUMA, Cussler himself wore a Doxa. As the broader market for dive watches continued to grow, Doxa eventually drifted from visibility until it was purchased in 1997, resurfacing in the early 2000s and continuously gaining momentum ever since. All the while, lovers of Cussler’s stories held Doxa close to their hearts. It suffices to say, a core component of the brand’s identity is inextricably linked to Dirk Pitt’s adventures and the legacy of NUMA’s discoveries.

While NUMA may have started as a fictional organization, it was brought into reality by Cussler in 1979 and largely funded by royalties from Cussler’s many novels. NUMA remains a non-profit and, in its own words, is “dedicated to preserving our maritime heritage through the discovery, archaeological survey and conservation of shipwreck artifacts.” NUMA has conducted dozens of expeditions to seek out important shipwrecks and answer questions that would have otherwise been lost to the depths forever.

The 42.5mm by 44.5mm antiqued case is replete with small details and nods to Cussler and aquatic exploration. Engravings can be discovered along the sides of the bezel, a red shark upon the crown, and, perhaps most enchantingly, the caseback is engraved with the names of shipwrecks and other artifacts which have been discovered, explored, and surveyed by NUMA. The watch comes in a charming book-style box and is accompanied by both a stainless steel beads-of-rice bracelet and a black FKM rubber strap — both equipped with dive extensions, of course. The SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler limited edition is limited to just 93 pieces, each of which is engraved with its own number in between the lugs.
