Bulova Celebrates 150 years with the premier of the documentary ‘America Telling Time: 150 Years of Bulova’
Last night, in New York City, Bulova held a momentous celebration of their imminent 150 year anniversary since the founding of the brand. To mark the occasion, reflecting on the depth of history and innovation of the brand, Bulova held an exclusive premier of the documentary film ‘America Telling Time: 150 years of Bulova.’ Bulova’s executives and employees were joined by media partners, clients, and friends of the brand, for a jubilant evening of reflection. The film was viewed simultaneously from the Paley Center for Media in Manhattan, along with screenings in multiple other countries around the world.
The watch world lives and dies by history and heritage. It’s the constant talking point for any watch brand that is at least old enough to drink – how long they’ve been doing what they’ve been doing. As much as watch companies love an anniversary, sometimes it can feel a bit like some (certainly not all) are grasping at straws. That, however, is very much not the case for Bulova.
What began as a small, family owned jewelry shop in the financial district of Manhattan, founded by the young Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova, grew into one of the longest standing watch brands in the world. Throughout its history, Bulova seems to have had an unrelenting focus on the development of new technologies, and new strategies for how the broader public learns about what Bulova’s mad scientists and watchmakers are creating.
Bulova’s history is chalk full of important milestones and horological distinctions. From the implementation of scaled manufacturing in Bienne, Switzerland in 1912, it was clear that Bulova would be a brand that followed its own path, with a distinct vision and path from its contemporaries. In 1928, the creation of the first clock radio revolutionized the way people started their days. The first radio advertisement in 1926, and then the first TV advertisement in 1941, both broadcast Bulova’s capabilities. So numerous were Bulova’s achievements throughout the 20th century, they even extended to the moon, when Astronaut Dave Scott wore his personal Bulova chronograph during his moon landing in 1971, on Apollo 15.
Chronicles of these achievements and many, many more, were immortalized in the documentary. But rather than acting as a culmination of the celebrations, it is only the beginning. With 2025 marking the anniversary itself, we can expect a host of festivities, insights, and most importantly, limited edition watches celebrating the history of this truly one of a kind watch brand.
