It has been a phenomenal year for the watch world. To round off 2022, we are celebrating the hits, the wonders, the visionaries and all the people in watchmaking who have made it so memorable in our annual Revolution Awards and Power Lists.
Today we’re celebrating the slender marvel, and the new ultra thin champion of the world, the Richard Mille RM UP-01. Meet our Technical Achievement Award winner for 2022.
A few weeks after the announcement of the earth-shattering Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Ultra, Richard Mille introduced their utterly mind-blowing collaboration with Ferrari, the 1.75mm-thin RM UP-01, and with that, the hyper thin category of watches has a new leader.

Mille’s primary concern with this watch was not to give up his famous shock resistance that dates back to early Basel fairs, where he would throw his RM 001 prototype on the floor to demonstrate how resilient the tourbillon was. In order to do this, Mille and his team had to follow a traditional movement and case construction. This is in marked contrast to the other hyper thin watches from Piaget and Bvlgari, which both use the back case as the movement’s baseplate.

The result is a watch that embodies all a Mille watch should be: ultra light, super ergonomic and resistant to the extreme. It is perhaps only hampered by the fact that a screwdriver is needed to wind and set the watch. However, that fact did not impede the 150 pieces, each priced at a cool USD 1.88 million dollars, from all being snapped up in a heartbeat.

Importantly, this watch also reaffirms Mille’s roots in the creation of the most technically innovative horological super machines on the planet.
