Swatch × Omega: Is The Super Blue Moonphase The Best-Looking MoonSwatch Yet?
Swatch × Omega: Is The Super Blue Moonphase The Best-Looking MoonSwatch Yet?
Yes, we’ve seen our fair share of MoonSwatches by now. Ever since Swatch rolled out the 11-piece Bioceramic collection in collaboration with Omega two years ago (and won our 2022 Best Collaboration of the Year), we’ve seen 11 editions of Mission to Moonshine Gold, two monochromatic editions of Mission to the Moonphase, and three iterations of Mission on Earth. So where are we headed this time? Well, apparently into the big, blue moon — specifically the rare lunar episode that happens every 33 months.
Now if we’re getting technical, there are two kinds of Blue Moon phenomena according to NASA, but neither actually has anything to do with color. Space.com explains the differences here, and in it, the seasonal blue moon is what the latest Swatch-Omega partnership is fashioned after. To refresh our knowledge of moon phases, it typically takes 29.5 days to complete one cycle, resulting in 12 lunar cycles totaling 354 days. Consequently, approximately every 2.5 years, a 13th full moon occurs within a calendar year. And that is all set up to appear on August 19 aka the first super moon of the year.
A MoonSwatch to buy after dark
The blue-on-blue color palette of the MoonSwatch Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase would remind ardent fans of the Neptune MoonSwatch, which inadvertently came up as the fan-favorite, a selection that may or may not have been affected by Daniel Craig’s timepiece of choice at the last 007 gala.
The Super Blue Moonphase features a panda dial, with a silver-opaline face contrasted by blue subdials. At 2 o’clock, the double moonphase aperture shows off blue moons set against a dark celestial background. And instead of a tachymeter scale, a pulsometer runs along the bezel, a first feature in the MoonSwatch collection. In completing the full blue uniform, the accompanying blue Velcro strap is finished with blue stitching.
The sale will run from August 1 to August 19, but will only be exclusively available during what Swatch calls the “blue hours” i.e. from 5pm onwards. Available at selected Swatch stores and pop-up locations, each customer can purchase only one watch per day per location.
