NFL Fan? There’s a New Breitling Chronomat Watch for You

This morning, as the dawn breaks on a whole new football season Breitling has announced what is likely to be its biggest collaboration of the year — a collection of 32 Chronomat chronographs, one for each team in the league. Each watch, which will be limited to 104 pieces in honor of the NFL’s 104th anniversary, and feature a unique combination of team colors on the dial and handset, in addition to a unique team logo in the 9 o’clock sub-register. The casebacks feature the NFL logo, along with an engraving indicating “One of 104.”

This massive release follows up on Breitling’s collaboration from earlier this year, when they released the limited edition Chronomat B01 42 Super Bowl LVIII, an 18k red gold Chronomat, which was made in just 58 examples with the Super Bowl LVIII logo imprinted on its exhibition caseback. The continuation of their collaboration with the NFL results in one of the broadest reaching releases of the year. As if the logistical challenge of creating 32 unique designs corresponding to each team weren’t enough of an undertaking, the release of each piece will be celebrated with 32 separate release events in the teams’ home towns.

The Chronomat utilizes the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, which was first introduced in 2009. This COSC certified chronometer movement is an impressive one, in that it is a fully integrated automatic column wheel chronograph movement. It also features hacking seconds and a 70-hour power reserve.

Creating a tie-in watch for each team was no small feat, taking well over a year for the project to come to fruition. But even more impressive than the task of licensing and approval which Breitling must have navigated to see this project through, is the amount of restraint with which it was executed. It would be all too easy (and unfortunately, expected) for a collaboration watch to come off tacky and over the top, resulting in something that looks like it belongs on a merch page or in the stadium gift shop.

The resulting watches are anything but. While some of the dials do feature bright colors (some of the most fun options like the Broncos, Vikings, or Eagles), many options are more subdued or even understated (Giants, Steelers, or Cowboys). Other than the 32 separate events celebrating each watch, the biggest challenge Breitling now has to tackle (couldn’t resist) is how they are going to manage the demand. With 52 players, an additional 16 or 17 on the practice squad, as well as the 12 coaches and support staff, it’s hard to imagine there will be too many watches left for die-hard fans.
