Rado’s New True Square Open Heart is Far From Black and White
Rado’s True Square Open Heart is a staple in the world of ceramic watches. Rado are, after all, acknowledged masters of this sleek, ultra-hard material, and never waste an opportunity to let ceramic shine. This is exactly what the Lengnau-based brand does here, with the first-ever bi-colour ceramic True Open Square, realised in stark black and white.
Except, it’s not just one watch; it’s two. In an alternating chequerboard pattern, one is cased in white with black contrasts, and the other is in black with white highlights. This harlequin-esque pattern is especially striking, given the softened square shape of the case and the open-worked dial. It would have been an even bolder look for the dial to be closed, but that’s a bit too much to ask, given that this is an Open Heart, after all. Besides, there are plenty of details on the dial, from the internal workings of the caliber R734 to the diamonds on the outer track.
The boldness of this bi-colour ceramic really shines on the bracelet. The ceramic bracelet of the True Square Open Heart is familiar, with softened lozenge-shaped inner links and slender outer links that continue the smooth lines of the lugs. The party trick here is that, as you can plainly see, the centre links are alternating in black and white. On its own, this would be a bold design choice, but the glossy finish of the ceramic really elevates the overall effect.
Naturally, there’s plenty of substance to match the style. The automatic Rado R734 boasts a solid 80 hours of power reserve, as well as an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring. On top of that, ceramic — besides looking great — is such a potent case material, being practically scratch-proof and impervious to colour changes over time.
This new pair of True Square Open Hearts are a particularly graphic example of watch design that extends beyond the dial, but the question is — who is this watch for? Well, it’s fair to say this isn’t your typical daily wearer, but for someone who is looking to stand out, even in black and white, it’s a strong option. There’s a fashionable, even sartorial element to Rado’s design that makes this True Square Open Heart a strong option for the stylish set. In addition to the flash of diamonds on the dial, it’s clear this striking pair is for someone who wants to stand out. The only question — black or white?
