Just ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix 2024, TAG Heuer announces the latest in its interpretation of the iconic square watch that takes it firmly into the 21st century.

The Monaco Grand Prix 2024 is coming up, and TAG Heuer has released a new model in its collection named after the historic racing event. Normally sporting a very ‘70s vibe, the square-cased icon (we can call it that) is also the perfect canvas for the kind of sport watch that would seem to more appropriately complement the world of modern motorsports. With a black-DLC’d titanium case and skeletonized dial, it represents a stylistic variation on the Monaco Skeleton models introduced last year around the same time.

We’re looking at the same basic features and dimensions found in the core collection: 39mm-wide case, in-house Heuer 02 automatic chronograph movement…that blocky case that Steve McQueen helped make famous. This interpretation, however, is a more sporty, contemporary one with a skeletonized dial and bold colors. Titanium also fits the theme. The skeletonized treatment follows last year’s, but this time a black DLC-treated case is paired to fresh blue and yellow elements.

Motorsport-themed watches come in many flavors, and TAG is strong in just about all of them from its retro Carrera to the fun and sporty Formula 1 collection. But if they want a bite of the market for aggressively styled, technical-feeling watches, the Monaco collection is a great platform for it. It’s naturally got that bold presence and avant-garde design that transitions well from funky ‘70s style to complementing modern supercars or F1 prototypes. Here, that finds expression in the exposed movement with angular cutouts and bright colors.

The size and shape of the Monaco also play the part well. It’s worth recalling that although 39mm wide, a square watch with this measurement will wear much more boldly than a round watch with the same diameter. That’s good for the type of watch this is. But if you’re concerned about sizing, this model may be a bit easier wearing than some other Monaco variants you might’ve tried on. Its lightweight titanium construction should help with that, as will the case’s black finishing which tends to minimize a watch’s visual footprint—though the overall style and striking mix of colors will undoubtedly draw the eye.
