Seiko 5 often marks the beginning of many people’s journey into mechanical watches. With numerous models and colors, it’s renowned for being an affordable automatic watch with impeccable reliability.

Among the myriad Seiko 5 models, the SNXS manages to stand out. Its cushion case design and modest size give it a strong presence visually without being overwhelming physically. The grey model, in particular, enjoys immense popularity – a timepiece you’ve likely encountered or considered during your collecting journey.

However, the classic Seiko 5 line has since been discontinued, making way for the modern Seiko 5 Sport lineup. This transition left behind the beloved classics, including the SNXS.

Thankfully, Seiko has answered the call to revive the SNXS lineup. Retaining the timeless case design, the new iteration undergoes a comprehensive upgrade from dial to movement. So, how does this rejuvenated SNXS compare to its predecessor?

The feel of the watch immediately distinguishes the two, simply due to their respective eras of origin. While the original SNXS may appear dated upon closer inspection, the new iteration is undeniably contemporary. Its modern, clean aesthetic stands in stark contrast to the previous model’s understated, casual charm. And that’s certainly a positive evolution for the SNXS lineup, with the latest generation continuing the story rather than being a mere one-to-one copy. The latest version truly belongs to this era.

What are the design changes that contribute to this refreshed look and feel? Firstly, the case receives an upgrade in construction and finish. Unlike the simple all-polished look of its predecessor, the new case features brushed and polished finishes, creating sharper outlines through contrast. The precision of the case’s edges and boundaries is notably enhanced, reminiscent of the cases of Grand Seiko watches. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the case is now water-resistant to 100 meters, an improvement from the discontinued model’s splash resistance.

Moreover, the dial undergoes significant changes. The date window ditches the outdated rounded frame for a sleek rectangular one with sharp corners, resulting in a modern look. Additionally, the new SNXS boasts a sloped flange around the dial, adding visual depth compared to its previously flat counterpart. The contrasting color of the flange further accentuates its impact. Another noteworthy addition is the orange seconds hand, injecting a sporty touch compared to the previous silver-colored hand.

That said, Seiko is exercising restraint in introducing the new dial color of the SNXS, with current offerings limited to three classic colors: blue, black, and silver. However, don’t be deceived, because of the design upgrade, the new SNXS looks stunning and attractive even in these simple colors. Just take a glance at the silver version in person, and you’ll undoubtedly agree! It’s expected that more colors will be introduced, considering the variety seen in other models in the catalogue. However, that doesn’t detract from the fact that the current versions are well-executed and timeless.

Crucially, the bracelet receives a substantial overhaul. Gone is the folded bracelet, replaced by a more solid construction with individually thickened links, lending an air of sophistication.

Lastly, the movement undergoes an upgrade as well. Housing the 4R36 movement, the new SNXS improves upon its predecessor, the 7S26, by introducing a hacking or stop seconds feature for more precise time adjustment.
