The Return of the Omega Speedmaster CK 2998
The Return of the Omega Speedmaster CK 2998
The original space-trotting Omega Speedmaster has made a remarkable return to production. This updated model is now equipped with OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 3861, a cult-favorite dial color, and a vintage-styled sapphire crystal.
First released in 1959 as the second generation of the Speedmaster family, the CK 2998 became a symbol of innovation and adventure. The CK 2998 gained legendary status when NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra wore it during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program on October 3, 1962. This historic flight marked the beginning of OMEGA’s enduring legacy in space, with the CK 2998 earning its nickname, “The First OMEGA in Space.”
The 2024 revival of this timepiece remains faithful to its roots. The updated models maintain the 1959 styling, with a symmetrical 39.70 mm polished-brushed stainless steel case. The iconic dark bezel, now crafted from black aluminum, features the signature “Dot Over Ninety” on the tachymeter scale — a hallmark of the original Speedmaster series.
A key design feature is the sapphire crystal, shaped to resemble the original hesalite design, giving the watch a nostalgic, vintage aesthetic. The gray-blue CVD-coated dial echoes the look of certain CK 2998 models produced in the 1960s, with vintage Super-LumiNova-filled Alpha hands and a white varnished central seconds hand. The caseback, which proudly bears a Seahorse medallion, is engraved with “SPEEDMASTER,” “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” and the date of Schirra’s mission: “OCTOBER 3, 1962.”
While these vintage-inspired details honor the legacy of the original CK 2998, the timepiece is thoroughly modern in its internal engineering. Powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, this watch represents the latest evolution of OMEGA’s movement technology, ensuring superior precision, magnetic resistance, and overall performance. This caliber draws from the historic Calibre 321 that powered the original Speedmaster models.
There are three new iterations of “The First Omega in Space”: on a black or brown leather strap, or a full metal bracelet featuring “flat links” and OMEGA’s comfort release adjustment system. Each watch is presented in a special box, complete with an exclusive “Legendary Moonwatch” leaflet.
