A pioneer of avant-garde watchmaking, MB&F officially opened its first MB&F Lab today, 19 September 2022. Situated in Raffles Arcade within the compound of Singapore’s 135-year-old Raffles Hotel, this boutique is founded and operated in partnership with The Hour Glass. MB&F Founder Max Büsser chose to open the first MB&F Lab in Singapore, because he wants to pay tribute to The Hour Glass’ ceaseless support of MB&F since day one.

A house of curiosities that ignites the imagination, MB&F Lab is situated in a prime unit right in front of Raffles Arcade’s North Bridge Road entrance. Entrants into this futuristic mechanical laboratory are greeted by MB&F’s iconic blue lens, which hangs just below the brand’s logo.

Just by the main door, the 48-piece limited edition Apesanteur spins continuously – this kinetic artwork levitates and was presented exclusively at the MB&F M.A.D. Gallery, up till now. The World Skies furnishes a nearby wall, which is a kinetic art piece that uses flip discs to display the weather. At the push of a button, the World Skies becomes a mirror that uses its flip discs to reflect the person standing in front of it.

Wander around this captivating boutique and you’ll also meet Balthazar, the two-faced robot clock whose eyes are seconds counters; the 33-piece limited edition MusicMachine 1 Reloaded that was produced in collaboration with high-tech music box company Reuge; Octopod, a metallic clock-topus (get it?) that has a finely counter-balanced regulator mounted on its minute hand; and the endearing duo of Kelys and Chirp. As Kelys the tortoise takes a stroll, its avian best friend Chirp pops out of its shell to sing.

Timepieces on display in the world’s first MB&F Lab include the Legacy Machine Sequential EVO, Legacy Machine Perpetual EVO, Horological Machine 7 Red Gold, Horological Machine 9 Titanium, Legacy Machine Flying Tourbillon, Legacy Machine 101 Steel and the recently debuted Legacy Machine Split Escapement EVO, which splits the escapement across two sides of the movement. The balance wheel, anchor and escape wheel are usually located closely together. However, the Legacy Machine Split Escapement EVO’s flying balance wheel is displayed prominently on the front of the dial, while a long balance staff connect it to the anchor and escape wheel located all the way at the back of this watch.
